The Odyssey (2026) – Movie Summary

The Setup: The Non-Linear Prelude

The film utilizes a partially non-linear narrative, beginning with the aftermath of the Trojan War. It is revealed that Odysseus (Matt Damon), the brilliant King of Ithaca, was the mastermind behind the legendary Trojan Horse. While the strategy brought victory to the Greeks, Nolan’s adaptation depicts it as a harrowing, traumatic, and brutal deception that arguably triggered the onset of the Bronze Age Collapse, leaving Odysseus deeply scarred by guilt and PTSD.

The Perilous Journey Home

While attempting to sail back to Ithaca, Odysseus incurs the wrath of the sea god Poseidon. His intended short voyage turns into a grueling 10-year wander through the Aegean Sea. Along the way, Odysseus and his loyal crew face a series of terrifying mythological trials and divine interventions, including:

  • An encounter with the Cyclops Polyphemus.

  • Navigating past the alluring yet deadly songs of the Sirens.

  • Surviving the lethal sea monsters Scylla and Charybdis.

  • A long, isolated confinement on the island of Ogygia, where the nymph Calypso (Charlize Theron) nurses him back to health and falls in love with him, detaining him for seven years.

Throughout his journey, Odysseus is guided and haunted by visions of Athena (Zendaya), the goddess of wisdom.

The Turmoil in Ithaca

Back in Ithaca, twenty years have passed since Odysseus left for war. Believing the king is dead, a parasitic group of noble suitors, led by the ruthless Antinous (Robert Pattinson), has overrun the palace. They aggressively pressure Odysseus’s faithful wife, Penelope (Anne Hathaway), to choose a new husband while depleting the kingdom's resources. Meanwhile, their now-grown son, Telemachus (Tom Holland), struggles to protect his mother and maintain order while desperately searching for news of his father.
