Obsession (2026)
Plot Summary of "Obsession" (2026)
The Friend Zone and The Wish
The story follows Bear (Michael Johnston), a timid and socially awkward young man who has been harboring a massive, secret crush on his childhood friend and music store co-worker, Nikki (Inde Navarrette). Afraid of rejection and hesitant to ruin the dynamic of their tight-knit friend group—which includes their friends Ian and Sarah—Bear keeps his feelings to himself.
When Nikki announces she is planning to quit her job, Bear realizes he is running out of time. After a night out, Nikki loses her crystal necklace, and Bear goes to a metaphysical shop to buy a replacement. Instead, he ends up buying a novelty toy called a "One Wish Willow"—a wooden stick that supposedly grants one wish when broken. Later that night, after failing once again to confess his true feelings to Nikki, a frustrated Bear breaks the toy and wishes for Nikki to love him more than anyone else in the world.
The Twisted Nightmare
The wish is granted instantly. Nikki immediately turns around, goes home with Bear, and the two start dating. At first, Bear is ecstatic to have the girl of his dreams. However, the dream quickly dissolves into a horrific nightmare.
The curse doesn't make Nikki genuinely fall in love; instead, it strips away her free will and autonomy. Nikki undergoes a drastic, terrifying personality change. Her behavior becomes intensely possessive, erratic, and deeply unsettling. She stalks Bear while he sleeps, isolates him from his friends, and exhibits manic, glitch-like behavior—shrieking unpredictably and contorting her body.
As the film progresses, it reveals a heartbreaking truth: the "real" Nikki is trapped inside her own body like a prisoner, occasionally breaking through the trance to cry out for help, while the supernatural entity forced by the wish controls her actions. Despite realizing that his wish has corrupted her, Bear's own selfish obsession drives him to tolerate the horror at first, just to keep her.
The Escalation and Climax
Nikki’s obsession quickly turns violent. During a party at Ian's house, Nikki's behavior alienates their friends, culminating in a gruesome scene where she violently self-harms.
Realizing the extreme danger, Bear desperately tries to find a way to reverse the wish. However, it is too late. The film spirals into bloody chaos as the possessed Nikki begins murdering those around them, including their friends Sarah and Ian.
The Core Theme
Ultimately, Obsession serves as a dark morality tale about entitlement, objectification, and limerence (the state of being infatuated with an idealized idea of someone rather than who they actually are). The title of the movie is a bait-and-switch: while Nikki appears to be the monster, the true, destructive "obsession" belonged to Bear all along.
